Argentinean Charly García and British Sting have released their collaboration, “In the city”, based on García’s “In the City That Never Sleeps.” It highlights the shared understanding the two legends have of music, while offering a tribute to an essential place in their artistic development. García’s ear for style meld with Sting’s vocal harmonies to create a fresh sound for the cover. They find synchronicity in the song’s connection to NYC, a city where Charly García has a designated corner at the intersection of Walker St. and Cortlandt Alley in the Tribeca neighborhood. “In the city that never sleeps, I sleep alone / In the city that never sleeps, I found my home”, they sing.
“In the city” is not García and Sting’s first time working together. They originally met at the 1988 Amnesty International Tour in Buenos Aires. When working together on the Spanish translation for “Get Up, Stand Up”, their mutual admiration grew.
Even separately, each icon’s history of groundbreaking music and sociocultural importance further links them. In the 1970s, Charly García defined a generation of Argentine rock as a symbol of rebellion. Designated by some as the “Father of Argentine Rock”, his defiant lyrics and his ability to blend musical genres such as progressive rock, tango and folk made him arguably the biggest rockstar of Latin America.
Likewise, Sting has left his mark on rock as a member of The Police and through his solo career. With the contribution of his band members, Sting’s music combined rock, jazz and reggae. Later in the 1980s, his music became more political; his song, “They Dance Alone” commemorating Chile’s disappearance victims was banned on Chilean radio stations.
Though the two artists haven’t worked together extensively in the past, their individual influences on rock and their connections to New York and South America coalesce in “In the city”. The idea for the musical collaboration took place backstage before Sting’s Buenos Aires performance last February. After the performance, a conversation at Hotel Faena launched the collaboration. The rest is history.
