Latinx Film Was Represented With 16 Movies in the 2023 Atlanta Film Festival. The 2023 Atlanta Film Festival + Creative Conference (ATLFF), founded in 1976 and operated by the Atlanta Film Society, celebrated its 47th edition. Combining Hollywood and independent films, it featured a total of 115 creative works (from nearly 10,000 submissions).
In 2023, Latinx film was represented with 16 movies. From these, only two were long-format films, produced in the United States, and both were documentaries. “JessZilla” (2023), directed by Emily Sheskin, tells the story of Jesselyn Silva, a 15-year-old girl from New Jersey, who is a national boxing champion aspiring to reach the cusp when she faces a cancer diagnosis. In “Silent Beauty” (2022), director Jasmin Mara López tells her story of childhood sexual abuse and the process of healing.
The remaining 14 short films (mostly documentaries) included the representation of three Latin American countries: “Blue” (Mexico), “Cristo Negro” (Panama), “I Seek Your Help to Bury a Man” (Brazil). More on our website (link in bio).

Atlanta: FREE SCREENING and Q&A with director. Open to the public. Saturday April 22, 5pm, at Georgia Tech.
We would like to invite you to the 2023 Global Media Festival, with a fantastic participation of Latin American filmmakers and movies. A highlight of the festival is the screening of “La Revolución y la Tierra ” [The Revolution and the Land], Peru’s most watched documentary of all time about the history of struggles for the land and citizenship in the country, and a tribute to marginalized cinema. The movie is in Spanish with English subtitles. After the screening we will have an in-person Q&A with the film director Gonzalo Benavente Secco. The event will be on Saturday April 22nd, at 5pm, Atlantic Theater, Student Center, Georgia Tech. The screening is free and open to the public (so feel free to invite friends). It includes complementary popcorn and catering.
The Global Media Festival (or GMF) is the GT School of Modern Languages’ annual film and discussion series focusing on sustainability across languages and cultures. The 2023 festival explores the theme “reduced inequalities within and among countries” (# 10 of the UN sustainable development goals). More information and RSVP here: https://globalmediafest.modlangs.gatech.edu/
We are happy to announce the line-up of Georgia Tech’s 2023 Global Media Festival, our annual film and discussion series focusing on sustainability across languages and cultures. The 2023 festival explores the theme “reduced inequalities within and among countries” (# 10 of the UN sustainable development goals). This year, the festival will run from Monday, April 17th to Sunday, April 23rd, 2023. ALL SCREENINGS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! They include complementary popcorn (and many of them catering). All events will be in Atlantic and Cypress Theaters at Georgia Tech’s Student Center.
Directed by Paul Alonso, associate professor at GT, the 2023 Global Media Festival will include screenings of international films from Peru, France, China, Germany, Japan, and Brazil and Q&A with directors and discussants.
Highlights include the screening of “The Revolution and the Land,” Peru’s most watched documentary of all time about the history of struggles for the land and citizenship in the country, and the on-campus Q&A with the film director Gonzalo Benavente Secco.
The GMF will also present “Making Pandemics” (France). In this award-winning documentary, French actress Juliette Binoche seeks to understand the causes of the “epidemic of pandemics.” She meets with scientists, specialized “disease ecologists” from around the world, to understand the links between human health and the health of ecosystems.
Transnational Chinese films will be represented with “Above the drowning sea” and “Ascension.” The first one details the story of Jewish refugees from Nazi Europe who found sanctuary in Shanghai on the eve of World War II. The second examines an increasingly stratified China by juxtaposing everyday life of assembly line workers with the nouveau riche.
Other screenings include “One day we arrive in Japan,” a documentary about Brazilian immigration in Japan, and the sci-fi style documentary “Beyond This Backyard” from Brazil.
The 2023 Global Media Festival is sponsored by the School of Modern Languages; the Atlanta Global Studies Center; the School of Literature, Media, and Communication; the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems; and Serve-Learn-Sustain.
“THE REVOLUTION AND THE LAND” (Peru, 2019).
Screening and Q&A with Director Gonzalo Benavente Secco
Considered the most-watched Peruvian documentary of all time and a tribute to marginalized cinema, “La Revolución y la Tierra” discusses the Agrarian Reform implemented by the military dictatorship of Juan Velasco Alvarado in 1969. Velasco’s so-called “Peruvian revolution” marked a controversial and contentious chapter in the history of struggles for the land and citizenship in Peru.

Considered one of the most important novelists of the 20th century, Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa (1936-) was inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre and followed the modern paradigm of the “public intellectual.” Unsuccessful presidential candidate in Peru, he is the author of the masterpieces “La Ciudad y los Perros” (1963, translated as “The Time of the Hero”), “Conversación en la catedral” (1969; Conversation in the Cathedral) and “La guerra del fin del mundo” (1981; The War of the End of the World), among many others. He won the Nobel Prize of Literature in 2010 and in 2023 joined the fabled Académie Française in Paris, becoming the first member ever to have written a book in French.
