10 Hispanic singers that have released songs about the Pandemic

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, various countries have experienced a national quarantine. Some artists used this time to write songs and encourage their listeners to follow the World Health Organization’s guidelines. The message has been to remain hopeful. This is a list of 10 artists who produced songs about the pandemic in the midst of the outbreak.

Debido a la pandemia del coronavirus, varios países han experimentado una cuarentena nacional. Algunos artistas usaron este momento para escribir canciones y animar a sus oyentes a seguir las directrices de la Organización Mundial de la Salud. El mensaje ha sido mantener la esperanza. Esta es una lista de 10 artistas que produjeron canciones en medio de la pandemia.

“Amanece” by Diego Torres, Macaco, Jorge Villamizar ft. Catalina García (Colombia y España)

Diego Torres- acompañado por artistas como Macaco, Jorge Villamizar y Catalina García – canta “Amanece”, una canción llena de optimismo: “de la noche más oscura sale, el sol pinta el cielo de color como un amor que se nos hace gigante”. Creado por la combinación de las voces de cuatro artistas, el tema coral busca representar a todos aquellos que atraviesan la pandemia juntos. En el comienzo de la histeria pandémica, las noticias siempre presentaron el surgimiento de casos de coronavirus y la caída de la bolsa de valores. Por eso, los artistas en el videoclip actúan como reporteros de noticias que nos pide evitar que la negatividad de las noticias los desanime.

Diego Torres, Macaco, and Jorge Villamizar sing “Amanece,” a song full of positivity: “from the darkest night, the sun paints the sky-colored like a love that becomes giant to us.” Created by the combination of the voices of four artists, the choral theme seeks to represent all those who transverse the pandemic together. In the beginning of the pandemic hysteria, the news constantly showed the rising number of coronavirus cases and the fall of the stock market. Because of this, the artists in the music video act as news reporters who ask us not to let the negativity of the news get us down.

“Quédate en Casa” by Luis Enrique Mejía Godoy (Nicaragua)

Luis Enrique Mejía Godoy, parte del “Nuevo Movimiento de Canción” que integra comentarios políticos y sociales con la música Folclórica Latinoamericana, cantó “Quédate en Casa” para alentar a los nicaragüenses a evitar la propagación de COVID-19. “Me quedo en mi casa, porque amo la vida”, canta. “Sé que si nos unimos por encima de fronteras, nacionalidades, clases sociales, color de la piel, credos religiosos y banderas políticas podremos con responsabilidad y sentido común ganar esta batalla contra el virus”.

Luis Enrique Mejía Godoy, a member of the “New Song Movement” that integrates political and social commentary with Latin American folk music, sang “Quédate en Casa” to encourage Nicaraguans to stay at home to slow the spread of COVID-19. “I stay home because I love life,” sings Godoy. “I know that if we are united across borders, nationalities, social classes, skin color, religious creeds, and political movements, we can with responsibility and common sense win this battle against the virus.”

“Lo Mejor Ya Va a Venir” by Reik (México)

“Lo Mejor Ya Va a Venir” ilustra el sentimiento de duda en el mundo debido a la pandemia. Habla de mantener la esperanza a pesar de la situación global. Reik canta, “Acuérdate que aquí hay amor, y que después de la tormenta sale el Sol; Vuelvo a decir que lo mejor ya va a venir”. A pesar de lo sombrío, hay esperanza en el horizonte.

“The Best Is Yet to Come” illustrates the feeling of doubt in the world because of the pandemic. He talks about maintaining hope despite the global situation. Reik sings, “Remember that there is love here, and that after the storm the sun comes out; I say again that the best will come.” Despite the grim outlook, there is hope on the horizon.

“Volver a Volar” by Banda Carnaval, Banda la Ejecutiva, Banda los Recoditos, Banda los Sebastianes, Calibre 50, Enigma Norteno, Jose Manuel Figueroa (México)

“Volver a Volar” es una colaboración entre múltiples bandas. La canción dice, “volver a volar, soñar, reír, y amar. Recomenzar abriendo las alas el viento gritar al cielo ‘Esperanza’ con gratitud y amor”. El vídeo musical muestra a las diversas bandas cantando sus partes separadas, pero están unidos juntos a través del vídeo, para enfatizar que a pesar de estar separados en este momento, aún hay esperanza de abrazarse en el futuro.

“Volver a Volar” is a collaboration between multiple bands. The song says, “fly again, dream, laugh, and love. Begin by opening your wings to the wind, shout ‘Hope’ to the sky with gratitude and love.” The music video shows the various bands singing their separate parts, but they are joined together through the screen to emphasize that despite the current separation, there is hope to embrace one another in the future.

“Toque de Queda” by Alex Rose ft Yanzee (Puerto Rico)

Esta canción de reggaetón habla de la vida en cuarentena y la gente que hace TikToks. Muestran a la gente cocinando nueva comida, los desafíos del desempleo, pagando el alquiler, y evitando “las bacterias”. “Toque de Queda” discute el miedo verdadero, el dolor que el mundo enfrenta al ver la economía desplomarse, y a la vida detenerse. Rose compartió la desilusión que muchos han sentido: “yo vo’a seguir durmiendo hasta que esto se acabe. Se están muriendo, qué jodienda”.

This reggaeton song talks about the quarantine lifestyle and the people who make TikToks. The song shows people cooking new food, the challenges of unemployment, paying rent, and avoiding the “bacteria.” “Toque de Queda” discusses the true fear, the pain, the world faces as it sees the economy crash and life stop. Rose shared in the disillusionment that many have felt: “I’m gonna keep sleeping ‘till it ends. People are dying, it sucks.”

“El Mundo Fuera” by Alejandro Sanz (España)

Alejandro Sanz escribió “El Mundo Fuera” durante la cuarentena. El vídeo musical que acompaña la canción muestra la nueva normalidad de calles y aviones vacíos. Él espera que a través de esta crisis descubramos que somos más parecidos de lo que pensábamos y más cercanos de lo que imaginábamos anteriormente.

Alejandro Sanz wrote “El Mundo Fuera” during quarantine. The music video accompanying the song shows the new normal of empty streets and planes. He hopes that through this crisis we’ll discover we are more alike than we thought and closer than we’d previously imagined.

“El Silencio” by Lila Downs ft. Paul Cohen (México)

Lila Downs compuso “El Silencio” durante el confinamiento; se trata del silencio abrumador de su estado natal, Oaxaca, México. Con un estilo alternativo/folclórico, ella expresa la soledad de cuarentena y los efectos de la ausencia de personas en su vida debido a las nuevas restricciones en México. En el estado de Oaxaca muchas comunidades indígenas instalaron bloqueos y crearon toques de queda para proteger a sus comunidades aisladas. Ella canta, “fui sola, camino la banqueta. En la esquina había un anuncio pegado con rondines vigilando cada puerta”.

Lila Downs composed “El Silencio” during lockdown; this song is about the overwhelming silence of her home state of Oaxaca, Mexico. With a folk/alternative style, she expresses the loneliness of quarantine and the effects of the absence of people in her life because of the new restrictions in Mexico. In the city of Oaxaca, many indigenous communities installed blockades and created curfews in April to protect their isolated communities. She sings, “I went alone, I walked the sidewalk. In the square, there was an ad posted with watchmen watching every door.”

“Unidos” by Bryanne (Estados Unidos)

Bryanne, una cantante de trece años de Miami, escribió “Unidos” sobre los retos que enfrentaron los jóvenes en la pandemia: las clases virtuales, el prom cancelado y la desaparición de la interacción social. “Echo de menos ir por la calle caminando, ver a mis amigos juntos, reír y bailar… Todo acabará ya no habrán más noches frías y podrás disfrutar de una nueva oportunidad que nos regala la vida”, canta.

Bryanne, a 13-year-old singer from Miami, wrote “Unidos” about the challenges the young people faced during the pandemic: virtual classes, canceled prom, and the disappearance of social interaction. “I miss walking down the street, seeing my friends together laughing and dancing. Everything will end, there will be no more cold nights and you will be able to enjoy the new opportunities that life gives us,” she sings.

“Cuando Amanezca” by Nibal, Justin Quiles, Danny Ocean, Feid (Venezuela, Puerto Rico y Colombia)

Desde una perspectiva transnacional, “Cuando Amanezca” combina las voces de dos artistas de Venezuela, uno de Puerto Rico y uno de Colombia. El grupo canta sobre la alegría de ver a alguien después de la larga cuarentena: “Ya perdí la cuenta de los días sin verte”; “No hay ni gripe ni Corona que me pare”. A través de una grabación de “Instagram Live”, los cuatro artistas describen una historia de amor en cuarentena con estrés, separación y reunión.

From a transnational perspective, “Cuando Amanezca” combines the voices of two artists from Venezuela, one from Puerto Rico, and one from Colombia. The group sings about the joy of seeing someone you’ve missed after a long period of isolation: “I’ve lost count of the days without seeing you”; “Not the flu nor the corona can stop me.” Through an “Instagram Live” recording, the four artists describe a quarantine love story of stress, separation, and reunitement.

“Esta en Ti” by Adriana Ríos (México)

Adriana Rios escribió esta canción para decirle a la gente que siga la pauta de los CCPEEU, informarle a la gente de las luchas de los trabajadores de la salud durante la pandemia, y decirle a la gente que se quede en casa. “Es momento de apoyar. Está en ti, no hay política ni teoría que pese más que una vida”. Habla de la importancia de quedarse en casa para proteger a los demás.

Adriana Rios wrote this song to tell people to follow the CDC’s public health guidelines, to inform them of the healthcare worker’s struggles during the pandemic, and to tell people to stay home. “It’s in you, it is not the moment to judge, it is a moment of support. It is in you, no political idea or theory is more important than a life.” Her song talks about the importance of staying home to protect others.
