Given the star has no English songs among his seven-album discography, it is expected to be the first fully non-English Super Bowl halftime show. What’s more, Bad Bunny will be making history as the first male Latin star to headline. “Ve y dile a tu abuela, que seremos el HALFTIME SHOW DEL SUPER BOWL,” he said.
Still, his upcoming performance is not welcomed by all. Much of the backlash comes from conservative commentators such as Robby Starbuck who protested that his performance will “divide fans” and push a more liberal message. Others dislike that the star will be performing in Spanish. There has even been a Change.org petition to replace Bad Bunny as the headliner with 73-year-old country artist George Strait. The petition, which has nearly 18,000 signatures, maintains that Bad Bunny doesn’t represent family-friendly American values.
Moreover, some have called the artist a hypocrite as he previously decided to exclude the continental U.S. from the “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS” tour due to current immigration enforcement. Still, fans come to his defense since a performance at the Super Bowl would be a powerful opportunity to put forth an intentional message.
While Bad Bunny will be the first male Latin performer to headline, he follows other Latin American and Latino trailblazers that have. Among them, two-time halftime show performer Gloria Estefan endorsed the NFL’s choice. Jennifer Lopez headlined with Shakira in 2020 (Bad Bunny appeared as a guest). Lopez, who also received negative responses from the political imagery in her set, shared her excitement for Bad Bunny.
Considering the Bad Bunny’s massively successful months-long residency in Puerto Rico, it is likely that thousands share Jennifer Lopez’s sentiment. For fully sold-out shows, the star performed his new album as a love letter to Puerto Rico, shining a light on the island and the diaspora. With the final concert breaking Amazon streaming records, the entire residency produced an estimated $733 million for Puerto Rico.
In line with his devotion to the island, the Super Bowl halftime show could be another opportunity to highlight Puerto Rico. Despite the divisiveness some circles claim he will instigate, the artist himself says, “Love will always be the answer.”
