10 Essential Albums of the new Brazilian Pop

With a tenuous connection with the sound brands that are associated with the music of Brazil – samba, bossa nova, carnival – the new Brazilian pop shares a tendency towards electronic music, contemporary R&B and avant garde pop. Here is a review of ten essential albums to dive into the new pop of the South American giant that is Brazil. Text and selection by Francisco Melgar Wong.

Con una conexión tenue, y en ocasiones inexistentes, con las marcas sonoras que se asocian con la música de Brasil –samba, bossa nova, carnaval- las nuevas figuras del pop brasilero comparten una tendencia a la electrónica, el R&B contemporáneo y el pop de vanguardia. 1. LETRUX EM MOITE DE CLIMAO, LETRUX (2017)

After her departure from the indie pop duo Letuce, the singer, songwriter, actress and writer from Rio de Janeiro, Letícia Pinheiro de Novaes, returned as Letrux, ‘club diva’ comfortably installed in a musical territory where disco, electronic and avant pop intersect. The album, which in 2019 would find a new version with remixes explicitly directed to the dance floor –Letrux em Noite de Pistnha– brings lyrics that approximate a nightlife that is described with hedonistic looks and sarcastic reflections, all framed by scathing guitars, synthesized string arrangements and narcotic sequencers that promise an intelligent release under the disco ball. Rolling Stone Brazil magazine ranked it among the ten best Brazilian albums of 2017.

Tras su salida del dúo indie pop Letuce, la cantante, compositora, actriz y escritora carioca Letícia Pinheiro de Novaes, regresó convertida en Letrux, ‘club diva’ cómodamente instalada en un territorio musical donde se cruzan la música disco, la electrónica y el avant pop. El álbum que en 2019 encontraría una nueva versión con remixes dirigidos explícitamente para la pista de baile –Letrux em Noite de Pistnha– trae letras que se aproximan a una vida nocturna que se describe con miradas hedonistas y reflexiones sarcásticas, todo enmarcado por guitarras mordaces, arreglos de cuerdas sintetizados y secuenciadores narcóticos que prometen una liberación inteligente baja la bola de espejos. La revista Rolling Stone Brasil lo ubicó entre los diez mejores discos brasileros del 2017.

2. CAVALA, MARIA BERALDO (2018)

Maria Beraldo studied music at the University of Campinas in São Paulo and is part of the scene of this city, where she has worked as a clarinetist for artists like Elza Soares, Negro Leo, Iara Rennó and Rodrigo Campos, among others. Cavala, her solo debut, finds her halfway between avant pop and alternative electronic music, with lyrics that exhibit a feverish exploration of her sexuality and realize her activism in favor of LGBT rights.

Maria Beraldo estudió música en la Universidad de Campinas en São Paulo y forma parte de la escena de esta ciudad, donde ha trabajado como clarinetista para artistas como Elza Soares, Negro Leo, Iara Rennó y Rodrigo Campos, entre otros. Cavala, su debut como solista, la encuentra a medio camino entre el avant pop y la música electrónica alternativa, con letras que exhiben una afiebrada exploración de su sexualidad y dan cuenta de su activismo a favor de los derechos LGTB.

3. TONUS, CARNE DOCE (2018)

Formed in 2013 in the state of Goiás as an indie rock band, in its third album, Carne Doce set aside guitars to explore a synthesis of MPB and electronic dance music. This new style, which combines a rhythmic base of disco and house roots with sensual and melodic lines of guitars and synthesizers, has made the group one of the most representative of new Brazilian pop.

Formada en 2013 en el Estado de Goiás como una banda de indie rock, en su tercer álbum Carne Doce hace a un lado las guitarras para explorar una síntesis de MPB y la música electrónica de baile. Este nuevo estilo que combina una base rítmica de raigambre disco y house con sensuales y melódicas líneas de guitarras y sintetizadores han convertido a la agrupación en una de las más representativas del nuevo pop brasilero.

4. SINTO MUITO, DUDA BEAT (2018)

Born in 1987 in the northeastern city of Recife, Eduarda Bittencourt Simões, better known as DUDA BEAT, debuted in 2018 with this album that quickly made her one of the most popular Brazilian singers at the moment: currently, the so-called “queen of suffering pop” is followed by no less than 1,606,360 monthly listeners on Spotify. In Sinto Muito we find a musical synthesis that is based both on the voices of the innovative singers of MPB and on the divas of contemporary R&B. The album was ranked among the best Brazilian albums of 2018 by Rolling Stone Brazil magazine.

Nacida en 1987 en la ciudad nordestina de Recife, Eduarda Bittencourt Simões, más conocida como DUDA BEAT, debutó en 2018 con este disco que rápidamente la convirtió en una de las cantantes brasileñas más populares del momento: en realidad, la llamada “reina del sufrimiento pop” es seguida nada menos que por 1.606.360 oyentes mensuales en Spotify. 5. DESASTRE SOLAR, LAURA LAVIERI (2018)

After spending a decade lending her voice to the projects of singer-songwriter Marcelo Jeneci, Paulista Laura Levieri launches as a soloist with this album that combines rock, R&B and Brazilian pop from the 70s. In Solar Disaster we find an artist situated halfway between the role of pop diva and collective euphoria that one heard in proto-feminist bands like Frantics.

Luego de pasar una década prestándole su voz a los proyectos del cantautor Marcelo Jeneci, la paulista Laura Levieri se lanza como solista con este álbum en el que se combinan el rock, el R&B y el pop brasilero de los años 70. En Desastre Solar encontramos a una artista instalada a medio camino entre el rol de la diva pop y la euforia colectiva que uno podía escuchar en bandas proto-feministas como Frenéticas.

6. AZUL MODERNO, LUIZA LIAN (2018)

Luiza Lian, singer, songwriter and visual artist, was born in São Paulo in 1991. Her second album, Oyá Tempo, generated complimentary comments in the press partly thanks to the music and partly to the medium-length film that Lian filmed to accompany it. This second album marked a first distancing from rockm, present in her debut opera, Luiza Lian, a turn that was completed in Azul Moderno, where we noticed influences from trip hop, samba rock, electronic music, arrangements of impressionist strings and melodies rooted in the most inventive MPB . The album was chosen as best album of 2018 by the Paulista Association of Art Critics.

Luiza Lian, cantante, compositora y artista visual, nació en Sâo Paulo en 1991. Su segundo álbum, Oyá Tempo, generó comentarios elogiosos en la prensa en parte gracias a la música y en parte al mediometraje que Lian filmó para acompañarlo. Este segundo disco marcó un primer distanciamiento del rock de su ópera prima, Luiza Lian, viraje que se completó en Azul Moderno, donde notamos influencias de trip hop, samba rock, música electrónica, arreglos de cuerdas impresionistas y melodías enraizadas en la más inventiva MPB. El disco fue elegido mejor álbum de 2018 por la Asociación Paulista de Críticos de Arte.

7. PARA DIAS RUINS, MAHMUNDI (2018)

Marcela Vale, better known as Mahmundi, began her career as a vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter of the carioca band Velho Irlandês. In 2012, she release her solo debut, Efeito das cores, which six-years later was followed by Para Dias Ruins in which he merge the most modern MPB with contemporary R&B. On this album vocal dexterity, beat worked to the millimeters, bases of perfect geometry, and sophisticate harmonies that are indebted to Jazz and bossa nova go hand in hand shake hands and listeners win hands full.

Marcela Vale, más conocida como Mahmundi, inició su carrera como a vocalista, guitarrista y compositora de la banda carioca Velho Irlandês. En 2012 lanzó su debut como solista, Efeito das Cores, al que, seis años más tarde, le siguió Para Dias Ruins, en el que fusiona la MPB más moderna con el R&B contemporáneo. En esta placa la destreza vocal, beats trabajados al milímetro, bajos de geometría perfecta y sofisticadas armonías deudoras del jazz y la bossa nova se dan la mano y el oyente sale ganando a manos llenas.

8. PAR DE OLHOS, YMA (2019)

Yasmin Mamedio, better known in the São Paulo scene as YMA, is a singer and songwriter who, with the exception of language, puts aside any local brand that identifies her as a Brazilian artist – not only is there no trace of samba, bossa nova , but there is not even a clue that points to MPB- and is located in a musical territory that drinks indie, dream and synth pop. The results, as evidenced by her debut album Par de Olhos, are remarkable.

Yasmin Mamedio, más conocida en la escena paulista como YMA, es una cantante y compositora que, a la excepción del idioma, hace a un lado cualquiera marca local que la identifique como una artista brasilera –aquí no sólo no hay rastro de samba, bossa nova, sino que ni siquiera hay una pista que apunte al MPB- y se sitúa en un territorio musical que bebe del indie, el dream y el synth pop. Los resultados, como lo demuestra Par de Olhos, su álbum debut, son notables.

9. REAL, BRUNO CAPINAN (2019)

Born in 1984 in Salvador de Bahia, Bruno Capinan debuted in 2010 with the album Gozo. After the release of his second album, Tudo está Dito, the artist moved to Canada to, in his own words, escape from the homophobia that pursued him since he was a child in his hometown: “one can be gay in Rio, but in the rest of Brazil it’s different. ” His sharp and delicate voice, which earned him the mockery of his friends at school, has now become the object of praise: the English newspaper The Guardian described it as “acrobatic, sensual, as angelic as profane.” In his third album, REAL, Capinan superimposes this voice on a musical fabric halfway between the acoustic and the electronic, between the cosmopolitan and the local, a sound space where ancestral percussions shake hands with the drum machine and the baths of synthesized chords, while the lyrics go deep into the transit of erotic bitterness to the ecstasy of love.

10. JAGUATIRICA PRINT, LUISA E OS ALQUIMISTAS (2019)

Formed in the city of Natal, Luisa and the Alchemists debuted in 2016 with the album Cobra Coral. In Jaguatirica Print, their third album, the band explores urban music beats and nuances them with arrangements, textures and sonic brands from different Caribbean genres such as dub, dancehall and reggaeton, in addition to adding a dash of hip hop and R&B . Although its sound is still experimental, it is an album with which you can drink, love and dance.

Formados en la ciudad de Natal, Luisa e los Alquimistas debutaron en 2016 con el disco Cobra Coral. En Jaguatirica Print, su tercer álbum, la banda explora beats de música urbana y los matiza con arreglos, texturas y marcas sónicas provenientes de distintos géneros caribeños como el dub, el dancehall y el reggaetón, además de añadir una pizca de hip hop y R&B. Aunque su sonido no deja de ser experimental, se trata de un álbum con el que se puede beber, amar y bailar.
